Then there are also talents to charm or intimidate in conversation You're given a lot of options to carve out your character, which is great. or get a dodgy character to teach you something more underhanded. There are so many skills and talents to purchase- you can ask a tough guy to teach you better combat moves. It makes it more rewarding to have less money. I liked that though - it made me excited when I heard about hidden stashes of treasure on the island digging it up and plundering the contents feels like a real reward - because you finally have enough cash to go pay a trainer to learn a new talent or buy some better gear. Not that the game throws rewards at you though - you really have to work hard for your gold everything is super expensive! I never had enough money Bajo - I was always down at the beach looking for oyster shells, just to earn a few measly coins! I never felt overwhelmed by things to do, it was quite easy to finish quests. This isn't an open-world game, it's much more focused with quite a linear narrative. it's a fun world to explore.Īs you wander about the place you can collect a variety of plants. or seeing a ship anchored off shore in a gorgeous sunset. No, but it does a good job of immersing you in the world. This game will remind you of witcher 2, but it's not quite up to that level of awesomeness. Yeah, you'll rack up quite a few glitches in your first few hours. and then kinda glaringly low budget the next. it's one of those games that is really beautiful one minute. Yeah, which is good - cause you're surrounded by some serious salty sea dogs!īajo, while this game wants to be a triple A title, it's not the most stable engine is it. When you finally get your hands on a proper Pirate hat - it makes you feel all the more authentically bad ass. And Baj, I always appreciate it when an RPG properly reflects, in-game, all the gear that you equip your character with. That was a nice first objective! Straight away you realise this isn't going to be a predictable set of quests. I liked that you can't see the Governor at first without getting some better clothes though! If you can get a map off someone though - like the Governor on that first island - you CAN fast travel. I think this game's locations are one of its strongest points. The environments are very organic and it does all feel quite mysterious. Risen 2 throws you in there and gives you the freedom to poke around the place and figure out where to go and what to do - it's actually quite easy get a bit lost. Yeah, no gothic architecture - a tropical setting! Straight off the boat on your first quest you've got this big island to explore - it's a sprawling murky jungle full of dangerous wildlife: warthogs. It's a nice change from the usual fantasy-based stuff isn't it? Playing a pirate-themed RPG felt quite refreshing though. It's all pirates, voodoo and the supernatural smooshed in together. I thought that too! Maybe that's what they were going for. Baj, dare I say 'Giant Squid'? This is all a bit 'Pirates of the Caribbean the RPG', isn't it?! Your first quest is to find a legendary magical weapon that has the power to defeat an awakened sea monster - the Kraken - that's terrorising ships in the region. You play a hero with no name (.but he does have a fancy eye patch), who is faced with the unenviable task of defeating a bunch of otherworldly monsters called Titans - in order to prevent the annihilation of mankind. Even though we're coming into the Risen storyline sort of half-way through, it doesn't rely that much on you knowing what happened in the last - this pretty much sets you off on a whole new adventure. It's a shame we didn't get to play that one. Risen 2: Dark Waters is an RPG from the creators of the Gothic series, and it's the sequel to Risen - a game that was actually refused classification in Australia due to it containing "sexual activity and drug use as incentive or reward". Bajo, do you remember a few weeks back you told me you were all zombied and ninja'd out and were hoping for a game with some pirates in it?
